PVC is made by joining together many vinyl chloride monomers (VCM).
Making VCM requires heat which is normally obtained by burning fossil fuels and so producing carbon dioxide.
The hydrogen that is made as a by-product of VCM production can be used instead of fossil fuels to generate heat. When hydrogen burns, the only waste it produces is water vapour. This is much more sustainable. |
Burning waste hydrogen to generate heat can help to reduce the need for fossil fuels in VCM production. Eventually, it may become a carbon-neutral process. |
