Uses of PVC
PolyVinyl Chloride (PVC) is a versatile thermoplastic. It can be molded into shape when hot and it sets hard when it cools. This makes PVC ideal for applications such as window frames, pipes and car parts. If flexibility is needed, plasticisers can be added to the polymer if it is to be used in products such as packaging, medical tubing and blood bags. PVC is used in many different products. Click on the pictures to see just some examples. Construction Window frames, guttering, water pipes and wiring ducts. Conservatories, doors, floorings and wall coverings. Medical Blood bags, transfusion tubing and feeding tubes. Heart-lung bypass equipment, oxygen masks, medicine packaging, artificial skin to treat burns and sterile operating theatre flooring. Packaging Food packaging, wraps and sandwich boxes. PVC packaging helps to preserve the food and protect it from damage.
Cars and vehicles Instrument panels, seat covers, protective side-moldings, wiring, mud flaps and anti-rust coverings. Electrical Flexible insulation for wires and connectors. Cases for electrical appliances like televisions, computers and games consoles.
